What is Classic Tennis?

When I first started this ‘social’ media launch: Facebook Fan Page (Classic Tennis), Twitter (@classictennis), YouTube (1classictennis1), Instagram (classictennis) it came at the end of a 15 week run of a new tennis show on SiriusXM radio called ‘Matchpoint.’ We ended the show because the time devoted and the audience penetration weren’t adding up. The metrics to determine our reach wasn’t as accurate as they are with Google or Facebook.

And that’s the key. It’s what YOU want matched to what I KNOW that gives us such a unique relationship. The access and instant response one gets from the wonderful world of social media is terrific. All in real time.

For the record, I have four National Junior titles; two NCAA National Team Championship rings; three All-American Awards, one NCAA National Championship Singles title; seven year professional tennis career with the highest world ranking 53 (Singles) and 30 (Doubles) in the world. And I’ve written, shot videos and have taught this game for over twenty years.

So just what is Classic Tennis?

Simple, Classic Tennis is a tennis player who can play both singles AND doubles, who plays from the baseline or at the net with equal skill; is not a one dimensional player, who possesses only a single style of play. He’s multidimensional possessing a variety of shots and strategies, who can play both offense and defense equally as well, but importantly, knows how to transition in the middle of a point from defense to offense.

A Classic Tennis player is someone who can think his way through a match and adjust his strategy during the match. In short, a Classic Tennis player knows there may come a time for Plan B, so he prepares for it as well.

For the record:

In the History of Tennis, there have been only FIVE players who have won the Grand Slam: Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year: Don Budge* (1938); Maureen Connolly* (1953); Rod Laver (1962*, 1969); Margaret Court (1970); and Steffi Graf (1988).

This tennis blog will link you to that immediate world of fan discussions, tennis videos, picture presentations devoted to this spectacular game of tennis with an unfiltered look at the game, the people who run it, the coaches who develop the talent, and the players who dominate it.

Enjoy!

The very best,

Matt Mitchell

  1. Hi Matt, I used to have your podcasts and they were great, I now want to get my son to watch them but can no longer find them. Are they still available? thanks,
    Ev

    • Hi Ev,

When Apple no longer supported their iWeb drag and drop service which was seamlessly connected to iTunes making it oh so easy to upload content, my Classic Tennis iTunes account was disconnected.

So, I am in the process of moving ALL content to my Classic Tennis YouTube channel … https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtU_5oI074cWYAv-AtWdtPw

And many thanks for the share. Hope your son finds what he’s looking for and if there are any requests, then send them my way.

      Best,

      Matt
